Rhino Doors announced earlier this year that they had secured a contract to supply eight SFC doors to an offshore wind farm infrastructure project in Scotland. The doors are for a series of large utility buildings (transformer rooms, etc.) connecting ultimately to the offshore array. The doors are hurricane-proof to withstand the area’s challenging and unpredictable weather conditions and are exceptionally large to accommodate the project’s unique requirements.
Paul Andrews, Managing Director of Rhino Site Systems Limited (RSSL), and Stuart Lawrence, Group Managing Director of Rhino Engineering Group Limited, recently travelled to the Shetland Islands (off the north coast of Scotland) for a site visit to review the installation process. The visit allowed them to meet with the subcontractors working on this critical installation phase, ensuring that all operations run smoothly.
The project involves installing large Rhino-SFC doors, a critical component for high-security environments. A four-person team from RSSL had previously completed the installation of the top tracks for these massive doors. The on-site team is now focused on installing the door wings, beginning with the most extensive set of doors on site: two doors measuring a colossal eight metres in height and 9.9 metres in width. The team has completed the installation of one, while the second one is currently in progress.
Installing these doors is complex; ordinarily, the team would work from inside the building, where the running gear for the doors is mounted. However, the structure at the floor level inside the building posed a unique challenge. The complex shape of the concrete floor couldn’t accommodate the lifting operations, so the team had to adapt and develop a new Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) to suit a revised installation process. This flexibility and attention to detail allowed the installation to continue efficiently and safely, a testament to the expertise within RSSL.
Standing next to one of the completed eight-metre-high doors is Paul Andrews, whose 6-foot 7-inch frame looks relatively insignificant here!
While the fair weather during the site visit was a welcome surprise, it’s certainly not typical for the Shetland Islands. With the unpredictability of coastal weather patterns, ensuring the safety and integrity of essential infrastructure is vital, and our SFC doors will do just that.
The installation of the Rhino-SFC doors represents another significant achievement for Rhino Site Systems Limited, highlighting the skill and adaptability of our installation teams. As work continues, the team remains committed to delivering the high standard of safety and security that the Rhino brand is known for.
